Another good reason to drive standard: When you lose brakes

Or at least, when you lose 1/4 of your braking.

When the outside half of a caliper falls off the driver side front wheel.

When you're getting on the highway for a 40 mile drive....

Yeah. So that was my night. Made it out to Boston, friend's bands kicked ass, made it home safe. Downshifting is a godsend in these cases. Other 3 wheels were braking fine but it sounded like Jacob Marley's ghost was hanging out in my wheelwell the entire time.

So again, drive a manual. When your brakes are suspect, you can just downshift. Only had to tap them coming to a full stop.

This is why every auto needs an "autostick" function.

Unless of course the battery or wiring harness or alternator shits the proverbial bed.... ;-)

Also - Jeep Cherokee FTW.

You can cripple them, but you can't stop them.

I would say down shifting has added many years to the life of my brakes. I am on at least 70,000-80 on the same set, rotors are good and pads are still pretty thick. Wonder how my clutch disk looks, but my clutch is in good working order too.

If you're rev-matching at least halfway decently, I think the amount of wear on the clutch is negligible. I always do that but I live on top of a steep hill, and in a very hilly area. Any car I've ever had has always just gone through brakes like crazy, even with downshifting/engine braking.

I have to agree with this wholeheartedly. After replacing the suspension on my jetta, one of my calipers was put back togehter kind of loosely by one of my "helpers". This led to the caliper pins somehow working loose and then my driver's front caliper falling apart after hitting a bump. But thankfully I have a manual so I was able to engine brake and use my remaining three to work my way to a nearby parking lot and avoid an accident.

If you have lost brakes AND all electrical power, perhaps you should take the hint.
